In this instance, little or no sounds make their way to the auditory cortex of the brain. Because the nerve is damaged or missing, this kind of hearing loss is permanent, and thus cannot be repaired with surgery. Hearing aids work for slight sensor neural hearing loss, but if the patient is completely deaf in one or both ears, then hearing aids will do no good.
