They have not, however, appeared to be quite as well accepted by the medical and nutrition-conscious community. So are low carb diets safe? The answer unfortunately, is maybe and maybe not, depending on the type of low carb diet that you choose. How to Select a Good Low Carb Program Low carb programs, as with any weight loss plan are best when followed in moderation. Extremes of any program should probably be avoided to stay healthy. To be sure that your selected low carb diet is safe, there are some factors that you can look at. The first is your fat intake. No diet plan, including a low carb diet is safe if it does not take into account the types of fat that you are consuming. The safest fats to include in your diet are polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats. These are found primarily in the fats from plants like sunflower, sesame and olive oils. The next thing that you should look at to ensure that your low carb program is safe is your intake of fruits and vegetables. Some of these programs recommend against fruits of any kind, and greatly restrict the types of vegetables allowed. As long as you avoid the starchy vegetables like potatoes, peas and corn; and stay away from fruits like bananas and watermelon that have a high glycemic index; you can and should enjoy many other fruits and vegetables to your heart’s content. Not only will you give yourself essential nutrients, but you will allow a healthy variety into your diet. Low carb diets can be a very safe and effective ways for shedding extra pounds. If you follow a program that includes healthy fats, fruits and vegetables and some whole-grain carbohydrates, you will not only be on the road to a thinner you; but a healthier you as well.
