Low carb diets aren’t completely bad; a low carb diet really does help some people lose weight, and it can be a healthy diet if the carbs aren’t too low. There is a problem with low carb diets, however. In fact, there are several problems that you should think about before starting a low carb diet.

Fiber

One problem with low carb diets is that they usually do not have enough fiber and that often leads to constipation. Diets that are low in fiber have also been linked to colon cancer, and some people think that chronic constipation can cause “leaky gut syndrome,” which may be linked to fibromyalgia and similar health problems.

Phytonutrients

Another problem with low carb diets is that you don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables, which can mean you don’t get enough phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are found only in plant foods, and they are the source of antioxidants and other good-for-you micronutrients.

Fluid and Electrolytes

Low carb diets cause fluid to shift out of your tissues and into your bloodstream. The extra fluid is eliminated from your kidneys, along with a lot of electrolytes. Rarely, you can eliminate enough electrolytes to cause a severe imbalance, which can cause a fatal heart rhythm.

Fats

Because they rely heavily on eating meat, most low carb diets are also high fat diets. Opinions are mixed on the issue of fats. Some people say low carb diets aren’t that high in fat and others say that dietary fat isn’t that big a problem. Other people say that any diet that is high in fat is unhealthy. If you are considering various diets, remember that the higher dietary fat content is one problem with low carb diets.

Monotony

Many people have a problem with low carb diets over the long haul because the food choices get boring. You don’t get the variety of meals that include pasta, rice and vegetable dishes.

Cost

Cost is a problem with low carb diets, too. Meat and other high protein foods tend to be much more expensive than higher carb choices. Some people cannot afford the food choices of a low carb diet. The problem with low carb diets is that there are several problems. High cost, boring food plans and nutritional inadequacies are all problems with very low carb diets.

A low carb diet can be problem-free if you include a reasonable amount of healthy carbohydrates. Especially if you choose fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Cut out the unhealthy carbs—like white flour and sugar—and leave the good stuff, and you will not have a problem with low carb diets.
