Restless leg syndrome plagues many people around the world, but fortunately there is a wealth of information available to those who suffer from this disorder. The people suffering from restless leg syndrome feel a very strange urge to move that is difficult to control. These urges start with a very uncomfortable feeling in the legs of the victim before they suddenly feel this urge. Some people describe the feeling as if they have spiders or other insects crawling on their legs. The response is often to want to slap at this pesky or dangerous bug only to find out there is nothing visible on the leg.

The cause of restless leg syndrome is not really known by the medical professionals who have worked to diagnose and treat the victims of this syndrome. Those that have studied the disease with a goal of determining the cause suspect that this is a genetic disease because a significant number of the people who suffer from restless leg syndrome have other family members with the same condition. These professionals also suspect that a cause of restless leg syndrome may be some kind of iron deficiency. Those people who suffer show evidence of anemia so this is suspected as a cause of restless leg syndrome.

Some of the researchers think that certain diseases such as Parkinson’s disease or diabetes are the cause of restless leg syndrome, but there is no definite information that this is the case. The treatments for these diseases help the patient and relieve the symptoms of restless leg syndrome. Pregnant women suffer from this condition and most women do not exhibit the symptoms after they deliver their babies so pregnancy is a possible cause of restless leg syndrome.

Another possible cause of restless leg syndrome is medicine taken for other diseases or conditions. These medicines include some taken for allergies and colds. This cause of restless leg syndrome is easily cured by taking an alternative medicine. Products with caffeine seem to exacerbate the symptoms of restless leg syndrome although there is no evidence that this substance is the cause of restless leg syndrome. Alcohol and tobacco seem to worsen the symptoms as well but do not appear to be the cause of restless leg syndrome. Researchers continue to work to find out about the causes of this uncomfortable condition.
