The Classic Club was once the host location for the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. Designed by Arnold Palmer and his company, the course is challenging for pro and amateur alike.

According to the promotional literature that they have on line and at the course, the Classic Club has over 30 acres of lakes and streams, 14 bridges and an abundance of pine trees and desert foliage. The elevated undulating greens are surrounded by bunkers large and small protecting the greens and in key spots of the fairway ready to catch an errant drive or approach shot. So that it is not so daunting for the amateur, like my brother and I, there are five (5) sets of tees which substantially shorten the 7,305-yard course.

My favorite holes is the par 5 ninth. It is right out of a post card, with a dogleg right and water on your left. The water comes into play on both the second and third shot. The island green is a great target for your third shot and it can be reached by a well placed approach.

The par 3 twelfth is another hole fun and challenging hole. With water on three sides, it requires a very accurate tee shot over bunkers and water. It takes almost a perfect shot to hit the green and stay there, because there is a sand trap in the back, so simply playing safe and long will not work on this hole.

Before I choose the Classic Club for my outing, I checked on line and found that the Classic Club, the course was voted by Golf Digest as one of the “Top five new public courses in the Americas” in 2006. Among other note worthy awards it was recently ranked #8 in California on Golfweek’s list of “America’s Best Courses.”

Amenities include a GPS tracker in all the carts and a gifted ball marker given to all the players by the starter. There is on course service of food and drink and a nice book with the each hole of the course marked out, so you don’t have to guess how far you are from the hazards and green.

When I finished my round, I headed for the clubhouse which is Tuscan inspired. The crowd at the bar consisted of both locals and travelers alike. The big screens TV had on a variety of sporting activities, with the Golf Channel on 24 / 7. I lingered in the clubhouse till my cell phone rang. It was my wife, wondering when I was coming home. I dutifully left, but not until I hit the pro shop for some appropriate souvenirs of a day well spent.

The Westin Mission Hills is an exotic desert sanctuary that has two championship 18 – hole golf courses. The Pete Dye Course or as I like to call it the “Diabolically Dye” is distinguished by hidden pin placements and carries over water that test a players length and accuracy. There are also, pot bunkers that are to be avoided at all costs, abundant trees and railroad ties that bring a nostalgic aura to the course. The smaller of the two courses, the Pete Dye, plays to 6,706 yards and is a par-70 course that is set up for a little fun, since it is more forgiving than its big brother. All skill levels will enjoy playing this course.

The big boy of the two courses, the Gary Player Signature course, was praised by Golf magazine as being a remarkable course that is “difficult well-designed and joyful,” and adds that it “may be the best golf course in the Palm Springs area.” This is a one of a kind since this is the only Gary Player course in the Palm Springs Area. It is over 7,000 yards that call for a 72 to make par. It is renowned for its environmentally careful integration with the desert landscape.

I stopped in at the Gary Callaway golf shop that it located adjacent to the Gary Player course. It features Callaway apparel, merchandise and accessories. Part of the Fantasy Spring Casino complex in Indio, Eagle Falls was designed by renown golf architect Clive Clark. Carved out of the desert is a beautiful golf course that is full of elevations, water features and foliage rarely seen on a public golf course.

This18 hole course has three sets of tees with distances ranging from 5,729 to 6,715 depending upon whether you set up at the Falcon, Hawk or Eagle t – boxes. At par 72 the course is a challenge to the high and low handicapper.

The signature hole is the par five 18th which has a working waterfall, hence the name Eagle Falls.

Behind the 18th green and off in the distance I spied the twelve story tower of Fantasy Springs Casino hotel.

The course has three par fives and three par threes. Greenskeeper.org named Eagle Falls the desert’s best value two years in a row. It is also the site of the annual Playboy Golf scramble as well as the Frank Sinatra Celebrity golf event, benefiting the Barbara Sinatra Children’s charities.

The day that I was out the sun was shining bright, but it was a little windy making the course all the more challenging. My playing partner and I got a special rate because he was staying at the casino hotel, but for those not staying at the casino the regular rate that time of year is about $75 dollars, less if you want to try one of the twilight rates.

The pro shop was a little disappointing, nothing more than a box car out in the desert. But it was fully stocked with the latest gear. There is also a snack bar and attractive girls selling food and drink on the course. Our golf cart had a GPS built into it, so I didn’t have to guess how far to the nearest hazard or green.

When you are done, you can go over to the casino to gamble the night away.

If you are an avid golfer, then the golf course at Mahogany Run should be on your list of things to do. It is a wonderful 18-hole course located on the north side of the island.

This tree-lined golf course is the third course placed in my choice of the seven finest golf courses in northern California located in the Pebble Beach area. Although it does not have the sea views of some of it’s Monterey Peninsual counterparts, it’s tree-lined fairways set the scene for this remarkably constructed course.

With it’s many dog-leg fairways, Poppy Hills was graded among the best courses in northern California and in the top 20 courses in all of California.

4. Coyote Creek Golf Club – San Jose, CA

The Coyote Creek Golf Club is the only Jack Nicklaus signature golf course within the bay area and it is the most popular spot to play for all of the area sports celebrities from teams like the 49′ers and Giants. Its immaculate design and superb layout was acknowledged in Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play” and was presented with a rating of 4.5 stars.

5. TPC Harding – San Francisco, CA

After a very long stint of not being a major course and some necessary redevelopment, TPC Harding is yet again a PGA Tour Tournament Players Club course. Harding Park is the most recognized golfing location within the San Francisco city limits and is very affordable to San Francisco and Bay Area inhabitants.

The course was opened up in 1925 and was home to the 2009 Presidential Cup and also the 2010/2011 Charles Schwab Cup Championship.

Monterey Pines was originally developed as a 9-hole course by Robert Muir Graves in 1963. The back 9 was added in 1972 and the course was redesigned during 2009 by Marc Messier.

Nicknamed the “Navy Course,” Monterey Pines is taken care of and managed by the Navy Golf Program. This course is the best golfing destination for beginning golfers and serious golfers alike. It is challenging enough to work on your game and satisfying enough to enjoy an entire round of Eighteen.
