Loch Lomond: A Place Of Beauty And History
Loch Lomond is the second largest loch of Scotland and has the largest surface area of fresh water in Britain. It is a part of Trossachs national park, the first national park in Scotland; some of it is at least. The loch is twenty four miles long, five miles wide at the largest, and the average depth is six hundred and twenty feet.
The median depth of the loch is 620 feet; it is 24 miles long and 5 miles wide at its broadest point. Loch Lomond is part of Trossachs national park, the first national park of Scotland. The Loch contains sixty islands depending on the water level. On the island called Inchmurrin there is a hotel and a restaurant.
Loch Lomond’s bank is home to nine towns, including Balloch to the south, Dryman and Gartocharn on the south east, Balmaha to the east, Rowardennan to the north east, Arrochar and Tarbet on the north shore, Inverberg in the North West and Luss on the western shore.
The main town located by the Loch is considered to be Balloch. Balloch has become known as the gateway to the Highlands, This is probably because Balloch is located only forty five minutes away from Glasgow the largest city in Scotland. It is the main town for entering into Trossachs national park. The town has become the main location for the Loch Lomond games; the town also hosts the Official Scottish Highland Games Association world heavy weight championship.
Loch Lomond is place of beauty and relaxation, what is exactly what a visitor could hope to find when vacationing in the area. Though the Loch does offer diversions such as water skiing, fishing and boat trips on the loch, the loch is generally an area of calm reflections. As all of Scotland the areas around the loch offer a few castles to visit. One of these castles also happens to be part of a golf club, so if your looking to golf as well as experience the history and feeling of Scotland the Buchanan castle golf club may be the destination for you.
In all Loch Lomond and its surrounding villages are not a place a person would go for vast excitement and it is relatively a calm and beautiful place. Of course surrounding the Loch there are a few castles to visit in varying states of decay including Buchanan castle a place that was once home to a clan that had been great warriors from before 1016 up until sometime around the late 1500s. The original castle Buchanan that housed the clan had been burned down in 1852, but was rebuilt by the fourth duke of Montrose in 1854.
The Macgregors were perhaps the most famed Scottish clan and was the main branch of the clan alpin. The Macgregors maintained ownership of their land through force, this created animosity between the nearby clans and eventually resulted in an attempt to remove the Macgregor clan, but the clan was too strong and fought back the opposition. Today the Macgregor clan is still in existence, though not similar to their past. They have a large number of clan members based on a strong blood line. They boast of having clan members in more than a handful of states and more than four countries.
