Going Camping? Organizing Your Next Camping Trip.

by Dan Samiliat

Going camping is such a wonderful family adventure. If you are going to take children with you, it will give them some precious memories that they will never forget. Anyone who went family camping as a child can probably vouch for that. No matter what the weather ends up like or what you actually do during the trip, it is almost always a great adventure when you are a child.

Don’t forget to bring the most important supplies. You will need to bring a tent unless you are planning to rent a cabin or stay in a camper. You will certainly want some kind of minimal shelter for you and your family. Depending on where you are camping, there are many potential things you might want better shelter from.

Some of the essential tools of camping include sleeping bags, chairs, flashlights, pillows, batteries, and a hatchet. If you are going to be tent camping, think about getting yourself a durable air mattress. It will really improve the entire trip if you get a good nights sleep.

Think ahead so you have the right supplies for building a campfire. Gather old newspapers or thinner pieces of cardboard. Take a lighter and some matches. I like to bring both a camping saw and a hatchet. I also would prefer to take my own wood. You might not be able to provide your own firewood for various reasons depending on where you are going to be camping. Some parks have regulations prohibiting it because of plant diseases.

You should think about preparing your meals. Consider bringing a cooler for food, propane stove, propane tanks, plates, silverware, dish rag, soap and a plastic tub for cleaning dishes. Not all state parks have a place to wash dishes. We usually take throw away plates and silverware.

Think about what kinds of clothing you will need for the camping trip. If you are intending to go hiking, be sure you have a pair of comfy hiking boots. You don’t need blisters. Bring loose clothes and a couple pairs of shorts if it will be warm. Bring some long pants if it is supposed to be cold. Your clothes may get dirty or ripped so you shouldn’t wear your best attire. Don’t forget to bring a bathing suit, rain poncho, sweatshirt and a hat. Those are must have items for any camping trip.

Remember to bring your personal bathroom products for you and your whole family. Pack all of the essentials into convenient bags. Make sure you bring cotton swabs, bars of soap, shampoo, deodorant, razors, and shaving cream. Don’t forget to pack contact lens solution if someone wears them. Don’t forget to pack towels for everyone. If you intend to be gone more than a couple days, you are going to want something to hang the towels on for drying purposes. Don’t forget to bring any necessary medicines.

Some other things that you could bring to make the camping trip even more enjoyable would be campfire popcorn, battery powered lanterns, binoculars, cameras, mosquito repellent, marshmallows and chocolate bars, bottled water, mixed drinks, cigars, Aloe Vera lotion, band aids, sun tan lotion and a radio.

Here is some other smart advice that you need. Bring activities for the children. You are going to have way more fun on your trip if the children have plenty of things to occupy their spare time. Besides, half the reason you are going away is for them to have a blast too. One guy that I know takes some old recordings of ghost stories to play around the campfire at night. You could also take a Frisbee, a kite, softball, baseball, or just a football. Bring anything that can be done safely outside. Make the most use of the wide open spaces in most parks.

Make yourself a personalized camping list. There are going to be things that you think are important that I haven’t mentioned. Make a comprehensive list so you won’t forget anything. Some people can’t leave home without taking a camera, their bike or insect repellent.
