Being a part of a workplace can sometimes lead to feelings of stress or exhaustion. People however react differently with stress. While some are hardly affected by stress because they are still able to perform their task effectively, there are also others that are severely injured by stress transforming them into non efficient workforce. These individuals usually begin to come out as fatigued, insensible, and weakened that can summed up as being burnout.
The characteristic features of burnout has been grouped into four, mental fatigue, behavioral fatigue, physical fatigue, and emotional fatigue. The sufferer’s tendency to elicit unenthusiastic approach in life is part of mental fatigue. The worn out’s inability to perform minimal tasks falls under behavioral fatigue. The constant feelings of tiredness, weakness, and head problems, wakefulness, reduced urges to eat as well as vomiting are characteristic of physical fatigue. One psychologist in the person of Herbert Freudenberger has explained the different indicators of burnout in his published book entitled “Burnout”. Exhaustion is one which is the constant feeling of tiredness and low energy level of an individual. Detachment is another which is a sufferer’s defensive mechanism against burnout. Keeping distance with others, his job, and overall company set up. Growing concern regarding ones action’s and interaction’s worth is indicative of boredom that is also a sign of burnout. Being edgy with almost anyone and anything in the workplace in turn is known as impatience which is another sign as well. Also the sense of control over every task is known as sense of omnipotence. Non recognition of work done or feeling unappreciated is one more indication of burnout. Disturbance in the normal body functions that can lead to conditions like ulcers, asthma, headaches and even heart problems is known as another symptom, psychophysiological problems.
Burnout in a workplace is usually a result of steady experience of stress. Certain circumstances can also contribute to the development of burnout such as scenarios that seem to confer low appreciation to individual’s effort. The feeling of low competitiveness for endorsement, inflexible policies, and some company dealings can also add up on the feeling of exhaustion. These can ultimately lead to unenthusiastic mind-set towards the job, superiors as well as the whole company. The private life of a worker can also add up to the causes of burnout. Broken marriage and unhappy social and family associations can aggravate the frustrations from the workplace making the sufferer all the more burnout.
Based on some of the latest researches on burnout the factor that determines the resistance of one person to this will depend on his outlook in life. The optimists are the ones who are most likely to cope up with stress more and the pessimists are the more susceptible types.
